A look at kit cars

The UK has some of the most passionate car fanatics in the world. Some even go as far as choosing kit cars so they can build their own. We want to have a closer look at them today because they can be an interesting use of ERW tubes. Then, if you want to order tubing, you can speak to us.

What are they?

ERW tubesKit cars are pretty much what you expect from the name; they are kits that give you the parts you need and instructions to build your own car. There are a number of different types, requiring differing levels of assembly.

The great thing here is you can choose kits to make some really amazing vehicles. For example, there are companies that specialise in making them for replicas of iconic vehicles such as the Shelby Cobra, GT40, and even the Ferrari 250. Caterham is the most famous brand, but there are many others.

Deciding on your project

With so much choice, you need to think carefully about what you want and how much time you have for the project. Some kits have done a bit of the work for you, supplying the chassis and body pre-assembled. So, your list of jobs is smaller. Others give you ERW tubes or other styles of tubing that you need to assemble to create the chassis. You then add the body panels and everything else.

In terms of time, some kit manufacturers estimate it takes up to 150 hours to build the car. If you can free up a block of time or several weekends on the bounce, you could finish in a matter of months. However, it could take much longer if you don’t have a great deal of free time and can only do occasional hours here and there.

You also need to look at the complexity and what you can handle. A lot of people who attempt to build kit cars already have some expertise. Others learn as they go. It is a good move to get an idea of what you will be facing to see if a particular kit is for you.

Finally, look at the tools and equipment you will need. You’ll be using a number of different things, especially if you are working with ERW tubes to assemble the chassis. This will include some you probably already have in your tool kit like screwdrivers and a torque wrench. However, you’ll likely also need some other gear such as a rivet gun and axle stands. An engine hoist is a must, but you may be able to rent one rather than buying. Some kit car manufacturers sell tool kits with all you need.

The final steps

If you do decide to build a kit car, ultimately you’ll want to enjoy what you’ve made and take it on the road. To be able to do that though, you should get a professional to check your work. Some manufacturers offer an in-house service for this.

When you’re happy with everything, you need to apply for a VIN number for the vehicle. Then, you must get an IVA from the DVSA. To do that, the car needs to undergo a strict technical assessment. You have to take the vehicle to one of the DVSA’s centres, shipping it on a flatbed as you can’t drive it legally on the road yet.

Once you have the IVA, you will get a number plate. It will begin with a distinctive Q. They are rare plates today, but don’t mean anything negative. They basically say the history of the vehicle is unverifiable. That makes sense because you’ve built it yourself from a kit. With your plates on the car, you can sort out road tax and get insurance like other cars. Then you are ready to drive.
